About the original artwork: Fathers of the Church is one of Tiffany's earliest and most significant mosaics, and the first to be produced by the newly formed women's glass-cutting department. Created for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, it was exhibited with the Tiffany chapel to showcase the firm's virtuosity in glass mosaics. The panel depicts a traditional religious subject—three early Church Fathers—in a bold new way. Its shimmering gold background is a nod to historical mosaic traditions in Europe. But by combining multicolored, transparent, and three-dimensional glass to render the figures, Tiffany's studios transformed the art of mosaic into something decidedly new, modern, and distinctly American. This mosaic is on long-term loan to the Morse Museum from the The Neustadt Collection of Tiffany Glass, Queens, New York.
